1. Education for All: helping girls in rural communities gain a college education

A new Moroccan NGO, Education For All has been formed to help provide college education for girls from the rural communities in Morocco. The first project of this Association is being built at Asni and is being supported by the Association des Bassin d’Imlil (the association that receives the 5% levy from the Kasbah du Toubkal).

Ten girls, who would not otherwise get the opportunity, started their college education in September 2007. We now have a responsibility and an obligation to making sure these girls not only start, but finish their college education. That necessitates funds on a regular basis for them, and for the eight girls who will join progressively each year. It may seem a small step since it will concern only 26 girls, but it is a start. I have taken the liberty of attaching the inaugural newsletter of Education for All at the bottom of this update. Full details can be found at www.efamorocco.org

2. Charity Cycle holiday in Morocco 29th March to 5th April 2008

Cycling in the foothills of the Atlas

Mike McHugo and Andy Phillips are organising the second annual ‘bike-fest’ in Morocco, to raise funds for Education For All. Dates for your diary are 29th March to 5th April 2008, starting in Marrakech. Answer the following questions:

  • Would you like to be actively involved in raising funds to support young girls to get a chance of secondary education?
  • Would you like to attend a gala dinner in Marrakech?
  • Would you like to spend a week in Morocco staying in some wonderful Riads, hotels and visit the Kasbah du Toubkal?
  • Would you like to join a group and cycle some amazing routes in and around the Marrakech environs, enjoying some healthy exercise with like-minded people; or have the option of spending a lazy day by the pool and engaging in some sight-seeing?

If you can answer yes to any one of the above questions, this IS for you!

3. Kasbah du Toubkal 3 new deluxe rooms opened September 2007

The view from the new Ouka rooms

We are delighted and proud to announce the opening of three new rooms with views at the Kasbah du Toubkal! As you may already know, all the rooms at the Kasbah can make this claim. The three new Ouka rooms opened in September 2007. This picture was taken in December looking up to Jbel Oukmaiden with the early morning sun.

4. Imlil Village Association update

The 5% levy raised on the bills of guests staying at Kasbah du Toubkal is the major source of income for the Association. This regular income has not only allowed the association to run its day to day affairs for the surrounding community, which to date includes rubbish clearance, village hammam and ambulance service, it has also allowed it to have an influence in other areas, such as financial backing for the girls boarding house at Asni, the building and stocking of the trout farm in Imlil.

5. Kasbah du Toubkal trekking lodge features in Condé Nast Traveller

The Kasbah continues to get amazing press coverage and we were particularly pleased with a 6 page article on trekking in the Atlas Mountains using the Kasbah and our Trekking Lodge in the Azzadene valley, by Anthony Sattin.

“…For the first time ever, it is now possible to walk the mountains in luxury:…Behind me was London, life, a busy week: ahead a moment of escape…over the past few years have turned it (the Kasbah) into one of the world’s great mountain retreats, Kasbah du Toubkal is successful for many reasons, one of the most important of which is the owners’ decision not to do anything without the approval of the people of Imlil…as a result the Kasbah still feels part of the community… The cloud burned off, revealing a sight of such beauty that I had to sit and stare at it for some time, to be sure I’d remember it… This was what I had come for: a taste… The real wonder of the lodge lies in the contrasts and combination that have made it possible…the knowledge that you have walked here…that you are just 5 hours away from London and yet along way from home: in remote Morocco, high up a mountain, soaking tired legs in a big, hot bath; close to the stars and yet tucked up in bed.”

Wishing you well and thank you for your support.
