Overview:

Explore with us the ancient city of Marrakech and visit Berber villages nestled deep within the High Atlas Mountains. Traverse the highest mountain pass in Morocco, descending to the magnificent Ksar of Aït Benhaddou. Continue to the dramatic Todra Gorge and then onwards to the beautiful sand dunes of Erg Chebbi. From the desert we head towards the medieval city of Fes and the capital city of Rabat, before making the return journey to Marrakech.

All transfers during your tour will be in your own private chauffeur-driven car or 4WD in the desert area.

DAY 1  Arrive in Marrakech view

On arrival at Marrakech airport, your private car and chauffeur will take you into the city of Marrakech and to the beautiful Riad Slitine, located in the heart of the medina (old quarter), where your en-suite double or twin standard room awaits you. The accommodation is provided on a bed and breakfast basis. Depending on your time of arrival, you are free to explore the medina and the souks at your leisure. Be sure to visit the famous Jemaa el Fna late afternoon to watch the ever-changing spectacle of entertainers and then admire the sunset from one of the many rooftop cafés. You may choose to dine here in the evening at one of the food stalls or alternatively at one of the many excellent restaurants in Marrakech. You can even dine at the riad itself where the food is highly recommended. The cost of dinner is not included.

DAY 2  Explore Marrakech view

After breakfast you will be met by an English-speaking professional guide who will show you around Marrakech and some of its museums and monuments, as well as introduce you to the mysteries of the medina and the wide array of shopping available in the souks. This is a full-day tour and all entrance fees to monuments and museums are included. Lunch is at your leisure and cost. In the evening you are free to dine out in Marrakech and then return to Riad Slitine for the night. The cost of dinner is not included.

DAY 3  Visit Kasbah du Toubkal view

After breakfast, at around 11:00 a.m., you will be met by your chauffeur and taken to Kasbah du Toubkal in the High Atlas Mountains, a drive of approximately 90 minutes. On arrival at the village of Imlil, you will be escorted on a 15-minute uphill walk along a trail to the Kasbah, whilst your bags will be transported by mule. Your standard en-suite room will await you. At the Kasbah you can enjoy lunch on the terraces or choose to have lunch in the village of Imlil. The cost of lunch is not included. In the afternoon you are free to relax and enjoy the spectacular scenery. Dinner is provided at the Kasbah.

DAY 4  Visit High Atlas villages view

After breakfast you will be given a 2-hour guided tour of the local area and if you wish to extend your walk, this can also be arranged for you. Alternatively, you may wish to explore some of the local villages on your own and take in the Berber way of life, perhaps meeting some of the very friendly local people. Once again, you can enjoy lunch on the terraces at the Kasbah or choose to have lunch in the village of Imlil. The cost of lunch is not included. Dinner is provided at the Kasbah.

DAY 5  Trek to the remote Azzaden Trekking Lodge view

After breakfast you will be met by your guide with mule and handler for a trek of about 5 hours’ duration to our remote trekking lodge in the Azzaden Valley, where you will enjoy our en-suite accommodation. The trek is not overly strenuous and you will enjoy some spectacular scenery en route. Your guide and his assistant will prepare a picnic lunch (included) for you. Dinner is provided at the Lodge.

DAY 6  Trek back to Kasbah du Toubkal view

After a leisurely breakfast, your guide and mule handler will meet you for your return trek to the Kasbah. Once again, a picnic lunch (included) is prepared for you to enjoy on the way. On arrival at the Kasbah, you may wish to take a hammam (steam bath) before dinner is served and you return to your room for the night. The cost of dinner is included.

DAY 7  Drive over the High Atlas down to Aït Benhaddou view

After breakfast you will be met by your chauffeur and start your ongoing journey towards the desert. You will cross the High Atlas Mountains via the highest mountain pass in Morocco, Col du Tichka, at 2260m, travelling through some spectacular scenery and then descending to the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Ksar of Aït Benhaddou. If you wish to stop en route to take photographs, your chauffeur will be happy to oblige. He can also recommend suitable places to stop for lunch. The cost of lunch is not included. With stops, the journey will normally take 6 to 7 hours. On arrival at Aït Benhaddou, you will be taken to the delightful Kasbah Ighnda where your en‑suite bedroom awaits. Dinner is provided.

DAY 8  Visit Aït Benhaddou and Todra Gorge view

After breakfast, you will have time to explore the Ksar of Aït Benhaddou. This 17th century fortified collection of earthen buildings is world-famous and has been used as a backdrop for many films including Gladiator, Jesus of Nazareth and The Mummy, as well as many others. From here, your chauffeur will take you via Ouarzazate to the spectacular Todra Gorge. The terrain you will pass through is very arid and desert-like until you reach the oasis town of Skoura, which lies next to one of the largest palm groves in Morocco and is part of an ancient trading route. Your chauffeur can recommend suitable places to stop for lunch. The cost of lunch is not included. Your accommodation is at the family-run guesthouse, Dar Ayour, situated at the mouth of the Todra Gorge, where your en-suite room awaits you. Dinner is provided. With stops, the scenic journey from the Ksar of Aït Benhaddou to Todra Gorge will normally take approximately 4 hours.

DAY 9  Walk through Todra Gorge, continue to the desert view

After breakfast, enjoy a walk through the dramatic and photogenic Todra Gorge, one of the most spectacular canyons in the world. After an early lunch (not included in the cost) you will continue on to Erfoud where you will transfer to a 4WD vehicle for the remaining 45 minutes of your journey to the breathtaking dunes of Erg Chebbi. Your accommodation here is at Xaluca Bivouac La Belle Etoile, a deluxe desert camp, where you will spend the night in a comfortable twin-bedded tent with en‑suite facilities. Dinner is served under the stars.

DAY 10  Dawn camel trek and transfer to Fes view

This morning at dawn you will have the option of taking a camel ride deep into the dunes to watch the sunrise, returning to your camp for breakfast. After breakfast at the camp, you will be transferred by 4WD to meet your chauffeur and continue your onward journey to Fes, the cultural and spiritual centre of Morocco. With stops, the journey will normally take 6 to 7 hours. Lunch en route is at your cost. On your arrival in Fes you will be driven to the beautiful Palais Faraj, where your accommodation will be in an en‑suite deluxe suite. The cost of dinner is not included. However, you may wish to take the opportunity of enjoying the excellent cuisine whilst staying at this stunning hotel.

DAY 11  Full-day tour of Fes view

After breakfast you will be met by an English-speaking professional city guide who will show you round this historic and cultural city. Included are all museum and monument entrance fees. The cost of lunch is not included. Continue sightseeing at your leisure, returning to Palais Faraj where you will once again spend the night. Dinner is not included.

DAY 12  Travel to Rabat via Meknes and Volubilis view

After breakfast you will be met by your chauffeur and continue to Rabat, the capital of Morocco, a journey time of approximately 5 hours. En route you will stop off in the historic city of Meknes and, if you wish, visit the Roman ruins at Volubilis. Lunch is not included. On arrival in Rabat your accommodation will be at the luxurious Riad Kalaa where you will stay in an en‑suite room on a bed and breakfast basis.

DAY 13  Morning tour of Rabat and travel to Marrakech view

After breakfast you will be met by your chauffeur and taken on a guided tour of the older parts of the city of Rabat and its ramparts. There are many interesting sights in the old part of the city and entrance fees to monuments and museums are included. Lunch is not included. In the afternoon you will be met by your chauffeur and make the return journey to Marrakech, an approximate journey time of 4 hours, where your accommodation will once again be at Riad Slitine. The cost of dinner is not included.

DAY 14  Depart Marrakech view

After breakfast, depending on your flight time, you may wish to do any last minute sightseeing or shopping in Marrakech before your chauffeur takes you to Marrakech airport for your journey home.
